Our books are printed using Print-on-Demand technology so we print each book to order. Not only is this method of printing mindful of our planet because no books go to waste, but it is mindful of our authors too. As an author, you are never required to shoulder the cost and hassle of printing, storing and transporting large quantities of your book. When a book is ordered by a reader, a retailer or the author, it is printed and dispatched in a matter of days.

Once published, your book will be available for purchase through our online bookstore on the Balboa Press Web site. Plus, you'll get an ISBN and channel distribution in Australia, as well as in the United States, which means your book will be available to anyone in the Ingram Book Network, the largest wholesale distribution network in the world. We work with two of the leading online book sellers, and Barnes&, to ensure your book is available for purchase to a worldwide audience online. In addition, your book will be made available at these retailers in Australia: Booktopia, Angus & Robertson and Fishpond.

Using Print-on-Demand technology, our printer can supply an infinite number of copies of your book. No matter the size of the order, books are conveniently printed whenever an order is placed, so you never have to deal with up front printing costs or storing books that you don't need.

Yes. The rights to your work are yours throughout and after our entire publishing process. We never buy your rights from you. Our non-exclusive contract allows you to continue exploring other publishing avenues while still working with us.

Self-publishing allows the author to remain in complete control over the finished product because the author decides what text, images, fonts, editorial changes, etc. are made to the book. Also with self-publishing, the author retains the rights to his/her manuscript, the timeline from start to finish is much quicker, royalties and book prices are set by the author, no agents are needed and the author has access to additional services he/she may choose to purchase.

Digital publishing is book publishing that is only done electronically. There are no hard copies printed for books that are digitally published. Instead, books are uploaded and published online. Readers pay to download digital copies of books onto portable, wireless readers or their personal computers.

Typically in traditional publishing, an author's agent will submit a manuscript to a publishing house for publication. If a publishing house likes the manuscript or portion of the manuscript they see they will pay the author an advance and buy the rights to the manuscript. Then, the publishing house will have full control over changes in the book and the cover design. Once the book is published the author will receive royalties from any books sold.

An ISBN for your work is registered under Balboa Press and is included with each Balboa Press publishing package. The ISBN will be inserted on the copyright page and on the back cover of the book with the barcode. The barcode is a digital image sellers can scan to identify the ISBN. Yes. We have non-exclusive agreements with our authors, so the rights to your book remain yours. You are welcome to publish your book with another publisher, contact a film production company and sell your rights to them, or explore other opportunities. These guidelines also apply if you want to publish your book with another company in the future. However, you cannot use the book files we create to print the book exactly as it is with another publisher.

We have no limit on how many manuscripts you can submit and publish with us. However, keep in mind that you are responsible to pay for a package and services for each manuscript so cost may be your only restriction.

Yes. Balboa Press can publish books in English or Spanish at this time.

Yes. Authors all over the globe can publish with Balboa Press, but we have primarily worked with authors in the United Kingdom , United States, Canada, and Australia. However, because of certain banking institutions, the currency which we can use to pay royalties has some limitations. The specific details are outlined in your author agreement.

Not all of our publishing packages include editing; however, we believe that editing is an important step for authors looking to achieve commercial success for their books. We do offer a full range of editorial services, which we encourage our authors to review based on their specific needs.

The Balboa Press online bookstore lists all of our published titles as part of your package purchase. Review all our packages to learn about other marketing opportunities included in each package. Once it is published, your book will have a global audience because it will be listed in our online bookstore. Additionally, retailers such as,, Bertrams, Blackwell, Book Depository, Coutts, Gardners, Mallory International, and many others will list your book for sale through their online bookstores, and many bookstores will have the ability to order your book for their physical stores.

Here are some specific advantages of using POD:

  • Earth-friendly
  • Easy and cost-effective to produce books as they are ordered, either one at a time or in large numbers
  • Unlike a traditional printer, which can only print a large number of books at one time, POD is an "as needed" printer
  • No wasted books
  • No need to store a large inventory of books
  • A book can be available for an extended period of time, instead of the book being "out of print" after one print run

Royalties are based on the payments we actually receive from the sale of printed or electronic (e-book) copies of your book, minus any dispatching and handling charges or sales and use taxes. Total sales of the work and royalties are calculated on a calendar quarter basis. Royalties due will be paid within ninety (90) days after the end of each calendar quarter. Payment of royalties can be made only via electronic funds transfer (EFT) to a United Kingdom bank account.

Also, we offer discounts to retail and wholesale customers, so the royalty amount you receive depends on what type of customer bought your book and any discount they received. The Library of Congress sets strict guidelines about which books may receive a Library of Congress Control Number.

The following types of books are ineligible for Library of Congress Control Numbers:

  • Books which do not list a U.S. city as place of publication on the title page or copyright page
  • E-Books (i.e. books published in electronic format)
  • Serials
  • Custom editions
  • Items under 50 pages, with the exception of genealogies, children's literature, and catalogue exhibitions submitted by museums and art galleries
  • Textbooks below the college level
  • Items not intended for wide distribution to libraries
  • Religious instructional materials
  • Expendable educational materials
  • Translations except Spanish
  • Music scores
  • Crossword puzzle books

Author Agreements

DocuSign is the leading eSignature solution in the market, allowing easy, efficient and secure signing of electronic documents. It provides a simple way to replace manual, paper-based methods.
An electronic signature, or eSignature, as defined by the Federal ESIGN Act, is an "electronic sound, symbol or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record" (ESIGN). All 50 states have laws that define electronic signatures in substantially the same way.
DocuSign meets eSignature legal standards around the world, with documents being signed in 188 countries today.
Balboa Press uses DocuSign and electronic signatures to make it easy, fast, and secure for authors to sign our publishing contracts and agreements. Approximately one to three business days after purchasing a publishing package, you'll receive an email that will prompt you to sign our publishing contract using DocuSign.
You can use DocuSign to sign virtually any type of document: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .xls, .xlsx, .txt, and more. DocuSign is also available on mobile platforms like Android phones, Apple iPhones, Apple iPads, and Windows 8 devices.
Yes, people are using DocuSign around the world, with documents being signed in 188 countries.
A digital signature by definition is a technology, a method of authenticating. It does not by itself meet the standards of what constitutes a valid electronic signature, nor does it mean that the signer's identity has been verified.

Yes, electronic signatures are legally binding in the United States. There are two Acts that establish this legality of electronic signatures - the U.S. Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act(ESIGN, 2000) and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act(UETA, 1999).

Both ESIGN and UETA establish that electronic records and signatures carry the same weight and legal effect as traditional paper documents and handwritten signatures stating: A document or signature cannot be denied legal effect or enforceability solely because it is in electronic form.

Not all eSignature solutions are created equal. Only DocuSign warrants federal ESIGN and UETA Act compliance.

No, signers don't need an account, and you don't need to buy anything. Signing with DocuSign is completely free.

No. The law recognizes that electronic signatures will not be identical to handwritten signatures. When using DocuSign to sign you may draw a signature or select a style. What it looks like does not matter. What matters is that DocuSign captures this step to create and adopt a signature.

Your DocuSign electronic signature has more information than just your ink on paper signature since the DocuSign signature can be clicked on to validate the signature and the document. This is not possible with paper.

Balboa Press will send you an email that contains a link to open the Balboa Press US Terms and Conditions on DocuSign. Click "Review Documents" to start the signing process. Alternately, you can access the documents by going to the DocuSign website; click the "View Document" link and entering the document code from the email.

From there, the DocuSign Overview page provides a short summary of the signing process and has the consumer disclosure, which covers conducting business electronically. After you review the consumer disclosure, select the checkbox for agreeing to conduct business electronically. Then click "Review Document" to continue. Important! You must agree to conduct business electronically with the document sender in order to view and sign the documents.

The first time you sign a document, you'll be asked to create your own signature. You can type in your name and select a font, create one with your mouse, upload a scanned image of your pen-and-paper signature, or use a stylus on your Apple iPad or tablet PC. This signature will be associated with a unique identifier so that every document you sign will be recorded as signed by you and you alone.

Yes. It's easy to capture and save the signature you'd like to use by using the Manage Identity feature. Once you agree to use a signature, you can use that saved signature and initials. Plus, you can edit your signature at any time.

In some PDF viewers, hyperlinks are not supported. The PC, Adobe Acrobat, Soda PDF, and Nitro PDF all support hyperlinks.

The Apple iOS, Adobe Acrobat, and the native Acrobat software from Apple do NOT support hyperlinks, but third party applications, such as PDF Expert, do.

Yes, DocuSign allows signing with pen on paper. When you receive the initial email, click the "Sign on Paper" option. Follow the instructions to print, review, and sign your document. Then choose to either return the document by fax or upload it as an attachment to the DocuSign envelope.

Pricing & Royalties

Yes, you will have the opportunity to earn money from book sales when you self-publish a book with Balboa Press. We do not license exclusive rights to publish your book from you, nor do we give you an advance against royalties like a traditional publisher. However you will earn royalties from each book sale; these royalties are taxable income for you. Please read other FAQs below to determine how book pricing and royalty calculations are determined.
You will receive 50 percent of the payments received from the sales of your e-book, less any distribution and technology fees, taxes and returns. Royalties will not be paid on copies provided free of charge or sold to the author.
Yes, you can be paid a royalty even if you live outside of the United Kingdom or are not a U.K. citizen. However, because of certain banking regulations, the currency which we use to pay royalties has some limitations. The specific details are outlined in your author agreement.

We shall provide a proposed price for the sales of your work in the distribution channel. If you have purchased a set your own price option, if available, the price we suggest is a proposed price for your work, and you are responsible for accepting our suggested price or setting a different price for each format of the work, as long as the final price is within the limitation we have set.

After the price is set, we reserve the exclusive right to modify the price of the work, should production costs change or market conditions warrant. You must approve such price change prior to it taking effect. If you do not approve the price change or we cannot contact you to obtain your approval for the price change, all or certain formats of the work will be removed from distribution.


The distribution cost is calculated by the costs involved in offering your book for purchase through various channels. These costs include maintaining your book on a website, keeping information current, order fulfillment, customer support, and any other processes to ensure that your book is available to others.

Royalty percentages for printed, electronic (e-book), or GBPio copies are as follows:

  • 25 percent of the retail price for sales of printed copies or GBPiobook copies directly through the Balboa Press website bookstore.
  • 10 percent of the retail price for sales of printed copies or GBPiobook copies through one of our distribution channels, such as Amazon.*
  • 50 percent of digital net received for each e-book copy sold.

Here is an example of a common sales transaction of a printed book:

  • The retail price (list price) for your softcover book is GBP 15.95.
  • Your Balboa Press royalty rate for retail transactions is 10 percent.
  • A retailer places an order for your book through Ingram Book Network, a distributor.
  • Ingram Book Network then resells the book to the retailer.

Please be aware that the largest retailers, including Amazon, Adlibris, and Bertrams, place orders for Balboa Press titles through our distributor, Ingram Book Company; those orders will appear as wholesale sales on your royalty statement.

* Please note: The 25 percent royalty rate only applies to consumer orders placed with Balboa Press. A retail order placed with Balboa Press qualifies for the 10 percent royalty.

Yes. As a Balboa Press author, you are able to purchase copies of your book for a discounted price. You'll also receive a larger discount as you order a greater number of copies. The price of the cost per book depends on the book format and page count.

The price of your book is set just prior to manuscript and cover approval, because the final page count, cover and book size help determine the price.
No. Once the price of your book is set, it stays that way for the entire life of the book.
Your royalties from book sales are paid on a quarterly basis (four times a year). All payments will be made by electronic funds transfer (EFT).

First Quarter: 1 January to 31 March (payments are electronically transferred in late May)

Second Quarter: 1 April to 30 June (payments are electronically transferred in late August)

Third Quarter: 1 July to 30 September (payments are electronically transferred in late November)

Fourth Quarter: 1 October to 31 December (payments are electronically transferred in late February)

You are paid for the books sold and despatched in the given time frame. If a book was purchased online on 30 March, but the book was not actually printed and despatched until 2 April, then you would be paid in the second quarter, not the first, since the book didn't despatch until the second quarter. E-book purchases are recorded when the sale is made.

Please note that you will only generate royalties from the original book sale. For instance, if a book is resold in any kind of second-hand store, you will not earn a royalty on that sale. Also, for retailers, you earn a royalty when the book is sold to a retailer who purchases your book for their store, not when a consumer actually purchases the book from the retailer.

We update new or modified direct credit information on 31 January, 30 April, 31 July, and 31 October. To ensure your royalty funds are transferred to your preferred account, please make sure your account information is accurate prior to these dates. Changes made after these dates will be reflected on the following pay cycle.

Please note: You must reference a United Kingdom bank account in order to take advantage of direct credit.

It takes about two months after the quarter closes until the royalty payments are sent to you as outlined in your author agreement.

The two month timeframe is because we do not receive the reporting sales information until 30 days after the close of the quarter. Then, we need additional time to verify, compile, and send out the information to you.

No, because of tax restrictions we cannot offer a split royalty payment between individuals. Of course, when the payment comes to you, you may do whatever you wish with the royalties.
Yes you can, but only if you transfer the entire rights of your agreement with Balboa Press to that person. That person will also hold the copyright for the book, but not the content of the book or your manuscript. If you would like to arrange this, please contact your publishing consultant.
When a book is sold through the Balboa Press website, it is considered a Balboa Press sale. A retail, or channel sale, is when the book is sold through any retailer other than Balboa Press (like Amazon or Bertrams). Your book selling price must be the same for both Balboa Press and retail sales, but you will earn a different royalty amount depending on the type of sale.
Royalty payments on books you purchase depend on how you place the order. If you place an order for copies of your book through an e-mail to Balboa Press and receive your author discount, then no, you will not receive a royalty payment for that order. This is because you receive the "royalty" as a discount up front. However, if you order directly through our website or a retailer and pay full price, then yes, you will receive a royalty payment for that purchase.
Often, retailers list books on their websites and advertise that they have "new and used" copies of books. Retailers use this as a marketing tool to entice the consumer by frequently offering a small discount on the used version. This does not necessarily mean that they have an actual copy of your book on hand, which is most likely the case if you have not been paid a royalty for the book sale. If any books are sold to a retailer, you will earn the retail royalty amount which was agreed upon.
When you publish with Balboa Press, your book is circulated to various retail channels through Ingram Book Network, our book distributor. Retailers can list the selling price of your book at whatever price they wish, although most follow the suggested retail price. However, some retailers may choose to list the book higher or lower than the suggested retail price, which is completely within their rights. Regardless of what a retailer sells your book for, you will always receive the retail royalty amount agreed to during the production of your book.

You will be provided with a royalty statement showing book sales and royalty payment details each quarter. The statements are compiled and cross-examined by multiple parties to ensure an accurate record of your royalty payments.

Both our printer and distributor employ independent auditing firms to verify the book sales data. Additionally, a globally recognised accounting firm conducts yearly audits of our finances to ensure accuracy.

However, if you feel there has been an error in your royalty payment report, you can contact your publishing consultant to look into the matter more thoroughly.

Even if you live outside of the United States, you will still earn a royalty, but we are required to withhold 30 percent of your royalty earnings. This percentage will be withheld unless you apply for an International Tax Identification Number (ITIN). With an ITIN, we will withhold according to your country’s tax treaty. Any money that was previously collected can be reclaimed with your taxes at the end of the year, but we cannot repay it. For more information, visit
